AT SERVICE

Teachers are at the service of their students. 🙌

I always want to be a better teacher… and when I say teacher, it’s not just referring to yoga.

But how can I be a better teacher to my students, to my children, and to myself?

Being a teacher means taking on a leadership role. So what makes a good leader?

It’s interesting. 🤔

When I think of the word “𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳”, I always feel some narcissistic tendencies. It sounds like dominance, authority, attention, and a little egoistic. 😬

But teachers ARE leaders. Instead of focusing on dominance and authority, we should view our roles as an act of service.

As a teacher, we do have to hold the authority. But when we are not careful, we can appear too dominant at times.

It may be a harsh thing to say, but we can give people the feeling that we are teaching them to seek attention and approval. We didn’t mean to, but we can show up that way.

There is one tip that helps me to stay in line with maintaining authority without being “𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤”, which is to remember our role as a teacher, and that is to be at the service of our students. 👩‍🏫

“𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦, 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯” – Adam Grant

By reminding ourselves that we should not display the dominant nature of a teacher/leader, we will be able to listen and observe our students more closely. 😊

We are leaders. But can we be leaders who also listen…

We are teachers. But can we be teachers who also learn and be ok to be wrong…

The key is to find a balance between the two.

It is not easy. And it takes practice. 💡
