In the previous episodes, we talked about how to feel inspired on the mat. But what if we can’t even get ourselves on the mat?
You have been saying you want to go to yoga tomorrow… But when tomorrow finally comes, you always say, “Should we just start tomorrow?”
Or you have “signed up” for the ZOOM class and meant to practice at home and it never happened?
Yup, it happens to me too!
Here are some tips to help you “build the habit“.
If it’s not on the calendar it’s not going to happen
Put it on your calendar. Schedule it. Book the class even though you know it’s not going to be full.
I can’t tell you how many times I go to a class because I BOOKED it. And when I wanted to cancel it, I have to think twice and I ended up going.
Habit stacking
I learned this from Atomic Habits by James Clear.
Stack this habit you want to build on something you are already doing.
Example: If you want to start a mediation practice, stack it with the yoga practice (assuming that you are already doing it).
It can also be as simple as every time I make coffee I will do a push-up. Make it easy and simple.
Prepare the environment or your gear
If you are in your yoga clothes, it’s more likely you will go to yoga. If your mat is laid out in the living room, it’s more likely you will get on the mat.
At the beginning of starting a habit, make your gear visible. It DOES make a difference, you will be surprised.
Find an accountability partner
There are people who are pretty self-disciplined, but there are also many of us who are more motivated when we have a partner.
Find a friend to practice together.
I can’t tell you how many times I go to a class because my friend is going too! And what’s better than dragging others to get healthy too?!
In October, we will launch the next series – Refine Your Practice. 🙌 Join me every Thursday at 12 noon. 🙂
